A belt with a suit works best when it supports the trousers comfortably and fits the outfit’s level of detail. Start with the waistband: loops, side adjusters and brace buttons suggest different ways to finish the look.

Read the trousers first
If the trousers have loops, measure their usable opening and choose a strap that passes through without folding. Try the belt with the shirt tucked in, since that extra fabric changes the fit.
Side-adjuster trousers may already sit securely without a belt. Do not add loops or force a belt over a waistband simply because a suit seems to require one.
For trousers that take a belt, explore JASGOOD office wear belts. Compare a restrained buckle and suitable strap width with your tailoring, then confirm the selected model’s size and fastening.

Three combinations to try
Navy suit and brown shoes
Start with a brown strap in a similar depth of color to the shoes. The shades need not be identical, but a pale, distressed strap can feel disconnected from polished dark shoes.
Keep the buckle compact if the tie already has a strong pattern. View the outfit with the jacket open as well as buttoned.
Charcoal suit and black shoes
A plain black belt gives this combination a quiet finish. Check that the buckle lies comfortably beneath the jacket rather than pushing its front outward.
If the shoes have a matte finish, a very glossy strap creates an extra contrast. Use that contrast deliberately or choose a quieter surface.
Relaxed summer suit
With an open-collar shirt and lighter tailoring, try a softer-looking strap that still supports the trousers. Avoid a bulky casual buckle if it distorts a lightweight waistband.
Get the tail and tuck right
Fasten the belt at a comfortable setting, then guide the tail through its keeper and the next trouser loop when the construction allows. A long tail should not hang across the front of the suit.
Spread the tucked shirt evenly before tightening. A belt cannot remove a large bundle of shirt fabric or correct trousers that are substantially too big.
Does formalwear follow the same advice?
A tuxedo or an event with specific dress requirements needs its own assessment. Check the garment design and invitation instead of automatically adding a business-suit belt.
Before leaving, sit, reach into a pocket and button the jacket. The best choice is the one that stays comfortable and leaves the tailoring hanging cleanly.
