Belt width is the detail most people never think about — and the one that quietly decides whether an outfit looks considered or accidental.
The short answer
A 1.5″ belt is the everyday workhorse. It fills standard trouser loops, balances a leather shoe, and reads as neutral in almost any setting.
A 1.25″ belt is the dressier option. Narrower leather sits better under a suit jacket and pairs with slimmer trousers without adding bulk at the waist.
Match the belt to the loops, not the outfit
Before anything else, measure a trouser loop. A belt that has to be forced through will curl at the edges and wear out early. Leave a few millimetres of clearance.
When to break the rule
Wider belts — 1.75″ and up — belong with denim and workwear, where the proportions can carry them. On tailored trousers they overwhelm the waistline.
